Smart kegerators have moved from a novelty to a genuinely useful product category over the past few years. A standard kegerator tells you nothing except whether the beer is cold, you don’t know how much is left, whether the CO2 is running low, or what the pour volume per tap is. Smart kegerators add sensors, connectivity, and monitoring that answer these questions without opening the unit or weighing kegs. I’ve looked at both purpose-built smart kegerators and retrofit solutions that add smart features to existing units. Here’s what’s actually available and whether the smart features justify the cost.
Purpose-built smart kegerators
Kegco and EdgeStar smart models
Several kegerator manufacturers now offer “smart” models with wifi connectivity, app control, and remote temperature monitoring. Kegco HBK269S-1NK ($400–500) connects to wifi and allows temperature monitoring and alerts via smartphone app. The smart features add $100–150 over comparable non-connected models. The core functionality, remote temperature visibility and alerts when temperature deviates from target, is useful for monitoring a kegerator in a garage or basement without checking physically. The limitation is that most smart kegerators only add connectivity to the temperature controller; they don’t track pour volume, CO2 level, or keg inventory.
Kegland and Keezer smart conversion kits
Kegland’s Rapt platform includes components designed for connected brewing and kegerator monitoring, the Rapt Temperature Controller provides wifi connectivity and remote monitoring at a price comparable to the Inkbird ITC-308 plus a smart display. Best suited for homebrewers already in the Kegland/Rapt ecosystem who have Rapt Pill wireless hydrometers and want unified monitoring across fermentation and serving.
Retrofit smart features for existing kegerators
Flow sensors for pour tracking
Inline flow sensors ($10–15 each, hall-effect paddle wheel type) installed in each beer line measure volume poured per tap. Connected to a Raspberry Pi running KegBot or similar software, they track remaining keg volume, pour counts, and per-tap consumption history. A display mounted on the kegerator shows remaining volume per tap. This is the most useful smart feature for a multi-tap keezer, knowing when a keg is getting low without lifting it or tapping until foam comes out. Total retrofit cost for a two-tap system: $40–60 for sensors plus $35–55 for a Raspberry Pi.
CO2 level monitoring
A load cell (weight sensor, $10–20) under the CO2 cylinder measures remaining gas by weight, a 5 lb cylinder minus the tare weight of the empty cylinder equals remaining CO2. A Raspberry Pi reads the load cell via an HX711 amplifier module ($5) and displays remaining CO2 in a browser dashboard. Alternatively, a cylinder gauge with an analog output sensor connects to a Pi for remote monitoring. Running out of CO2 mid-keg is the most avoidable kegerator frustration, remote CO2 level monitoring completely prevents it.
Temperature monitoring via Inkbird wifi controller
The Inkbird ITC-308 WIFI ($35–45, a few dollars more than the non-wifi version) adds smartphone connectivity to the standard dual-stage temperature controller. Temperature and setpoint are visible in the Inkbird app from anywhere on your home network; push alerts notify you if temperature deviates from range. This is the lowest-cost, highest-value smart upgrade for any existing kegerator, replacing a standard temperature controller with the wifi version adds remote monitoring at minimal cost.

A purpose-built smart kegerator is worth the premium if: you’re buying new anyway (the $100–150 smart premium is modest compared to the total unit cost), you have a kegerator in a location you don’t check frequently (garage, basement, office), and you value remote temperature monitoring and alerts. If you already have a working kegerator, retrofitting smart features selectively is more cost-effective than replacing the unit, add the Inkbird wifi controller ($35–45) for temperature monitoring, add flow sensors ($40–60) for pour tracking, and you have the most useful smart features for under $100 in parts. The pour tracking feature is the most practical addition for multi-tap setups where knowing remaining keg volume requires otherwise lifting 30 lb kegs to estimate by weight.
