If you brew at home, knowing what ABV the major Budweiser variants are aimed at is useful for two reasons: it gives you a benchmark for what a “standard American lager” looks like in numbers, and it tells you what’s plausible to clone in a 5-gallon batch. Below is the lineup, what each one actually is in brewing terms, and which ones are worth your time as a homebrewer.

What these numbers mean for a homebrewer
The classic Budweiser at 5.0% ABV is a textbook American lager. To hit it you want an OG around 1.046, an FG around 1.008 (so ~83% apparent attenuation), and a grain bill with about 30% rice or corn alongside two-row and/or six-row barley. Adjuncts are the part most clone recipes get wrong, without them you’ll end up with a more malt-forward beer than Budweiser’s signature crisp dryness.
For yeast, a clean American lager strain is what you want. WLP840 (American Lager) or Wyeast 2007 (Pilsen Lager) are the standard picks; on the dry side, Saflager W-34/70 is the workhorse and ferments cleanly at 11-13°C (52-55°F). Hops are minimal: ~10-15 IBU of a noble hop like Hallertau, added early.
Which Budweiser variants are worth cloning
Original Budweiser (5.0%). Cloneable, and a useful exercise because nailing a clean rice-adjunct lager teaches you fermentation discipline. Your beer will not taste exactly like supermarket Bud, partly because their water profile is specific and partly because they age it on beechwood chips for clarification, but you can get within sensory distance.
Reserve Copper Lager (6.2%). The most interesting one for a homebrewer. Aged on bourbon-barrel staves, copper-colored, more malt presence than the rest of the lineup. Recreating it at home means brewing an amber lager around 1.057 OG with a Vienna malt base and a touch of crystal, then conditioning on lightly toasted bourbon-soaked oak cubes for 3-4 weeks. The barrel character is what makes this style worth your kettle time.
Bud Light Platinum (6.0%). Plausible. Add a small amount of corn sugar to a Bud Light-style base to boost ABV without adding body. The result is technically a high-gravity light lager, which is its own minor curiosity.
What you can’t really do at home
Bud Ice (5.5%). Ice-brewing, chilling fermented beer below freezing and removing the water ice, is doable but illegal to call “ice beer” in some jurisdictions if you boost ABV without licensing. The bigger issue is the equipment: you need controllable sub-zero temperature and a way to separate ice cleanly. Possible with a chest freezer and patience; not really worth it.
Nitro Gold (5.5%). The 5.5% ABV is easy. The nitrogen presentation is not, nitro requires a beer-gas mix (typically 70% N₂ / 30% CO₂) and a stout faucet with a restrictor disc. If you already have a kegerator and want to go nitro, fine; if not, the cost of entry is higher than the experience justifies.
Budweiser Zero (0.0%). Dealcoholization requires either reverse osmosis or vacuum distillation. Neither fits in a home brewery. The closest home approximation is brewing a very low-OG beer with a low-attenuating yeast strain, you’ll land around 0.5% ABV, not zero.
A note on the numbers
The ABV figures above are the published US-market values. International Budweiser variants vary, in markets with stricter alcohol-content tax brackets (parts of the EU, Canada, the UK), the same labeled product is sometimes brewed at 4.0-4.8% to fit a lower tax band. Don’t assume the recipe is identical across borders. For style-guideline references, the BJCP entry for American Lager (1B) is the cleanest comparison point.
For what it’s worth, I’d skip cloning Bud Light. Nothing wrong with the beer, but as a homebrew project it’s an exercise in restraint without much upside, a clean American light lager is one of the hardest styles to brew well and one of the least interesting to drink at the end. The Reserve Copper is a better use of your weekend.
One caveat: the OG/FG estimates in the table are derived backwards from the published ABV using typical attenuation. AB-InBev doesn’t publish recipes, so treat these as starting points, not gospel. If you brew a clone and your numbers come out a few points off, that’s normal.
