Hop substitution chart
Search for the hop your recipe calls for to see the substitutes our 68 variety guides name, then open that guide before you swap. For a bittering addition, scale the weight by alpha acid (grams × old alpha ÷ new alpha); for flavour and aroma, expect the beer to change and treat any substitute as a trial.

How this chart was built
Every row repeats what one of our hop variety guides says, read on 4 November 2026; nothing has been added. 57 guides give their own list of substitutes. 4 report a hop supplier’s comparison list, which the guide treats as candidates to test. 7 deliberately name no substitute and instead explain the variety’s profile and the bittering calculation, so their rows say so rather than inventing a pairing.
The substitutes are editorial suggestions, not results of side-by-side brewing trials. A search also finds the hops for which your search term is listed as a substitute, which helps when you have a hop in the freezer and want to know what it can stand in for.
Bittering and aroma are separate decisions
For an early boil addition, the main job is bitterness. Keep the hop form, boil time and volume the same and scale by the alpha acid printed on each packet: replacing 25 g at 16% with a hop at 13% needs 25 × 16 ÷ 13 = 30.8 g. The hop substitution calculator does this for you.
That ratio does not carry over to late, whirlpool or dry-hop additions, because alpha acid says nothing about aroma. For those, decide which part of the original hop’s character matters most, and expect any substitute to move the beer in its own direction.
Before you use the result
- Use the alpha acid on your actual packets, not a typical range.
- Open the variety guide for amounts, ratios and caveats before swapping.
- A substitute changes the beer; record what you used and how it turned out.
- For adults of legal drinking age. Brewing and alcohol laws vary by location.
A quick learning check
Why should a dry-hop substitute not use the alpha-acid ratio?
