How It Works
The Adjunct Calculator uses the following formula to calculate the amount of adjunct needed to raise the original gravity of a beer: Adjunct Weight = (Desired OG – Current Gravity) * Pre-Boil Volume / Adjunct Efficiency. The adjunct efficiency is based on the type of adjunct used: sugar (46 points per pound per gallon), honey (36 points per pound per gallon), and DME (45 points per pound per gallon).
How to Use
- Enter the desired original gravity of your beer
- Enter the pre-boil volume of your beer in gallons
- Enter the current gravity of your beer
- Select the type of adjunct you want to use (sugar, honey, or DME)
- Click the “Calculate” button to determine the amount of adjunct needed
Common Questions
What is the difference between sugar, honey, and DME?
Sugar, honey, and DME are all types of adjuncts that can be used to raise the original gravity of a beer. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate that ferments completely, while honey is a more complex carbohydrate that can contribute flavor and aroma to the beer. DME (dry malt extract) is a concentrated form of malt extract that can be used to add body and flavor to the beer.
